Finding Stillness in a Busy World

Finding Stillness in a Busy World

We live in a world that celebrates doing. Productivity apps, hustle culture, the endless scroll — our nervous systems rarely get a moment to simply be.

The power of five minutes

You don’t need an hour-long meditation retreat to find stillness. Five minutes of conscious breathing — what we call pranayama in yoga — can shift your entire nervous system from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest.

Here’s a simple practice you can try right now:

  1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes
  2. Inhale through your nose for a count of four
  3. Hold gently at the top for a count of four
  4. Exhale slowly through your nose for a count of six
  5. Repeat for five minutes

Making it stick

The key isn’t duration — it’s consistency. Five minutes every morning, before you check your phone, before the world rushes in. That small seed of stillness grows into something remarkable over time.

I’ve seen students who started with just this simple practice go on to develop a deep, nourishing meditation practice. It all begins with one breath.

Come practice with us — our Yin Yoga and Restorative classes are perfect for cultivating stillness.
